The Lowell High School Chapter of the Black Unity Club has been hard at work all year. Membership in the BUC is open to all LHS students. Under the direction of LHS alumnae Denia Gibson, BUC members meet every Thursday in the Little Theatre or in Room 515. Students come together to learn more about the African American culture and their own background. The mission of the club is to inform and educate the urban youth on their ancestors’ past achievements. The club focuses on the difficulties of the African American youth. As a club, we focus on different ways to give back to the community. In November, the BUC hosted a dinner for local veterans. Club members felt as though veterans deserved to be recognized for the service they have provided to our country and the BUC hosted a dinner in their honor. In preparation for Black History Month, club members made a variety of posters and hung them throughout the LHS facility educating students on important members of the African American community and their contributions to society. Celebrating Black History Month in February, members hosted a Pot Luck Dinner that included speeches, songs & dancing.. Throughout the year, student members participate in a variety of fundraisers including two successful Krispy Kreme sales; much of the proceeds from fundraisers are directed toward scholarships for graduating senior members. Student members recently received tolerance bracelets for their commitment to the club.
