Attention all students entering Grade 9 in September!   Are you looking for something really fun to do with your friends this summer?  Join us at the Compass Program and learn some new skills and uncover your hidden talents.  This FREE Program will be held at the Stoklosa School starting July 5th and runs Monday-Thursday ending July 28th.  Students will attend from 8:10am-12:10pm with breakfast and lunch provided.  Transportation is also available. We are also planning three fun field trips so we can get out and have some summer fun!

The Compass Program Summer Activities 2011

ARTbotics
Do you love art, sculpture, computer programming, and robotics? Do you want to display your creative side? You will even get to create your own work of robotic art and display your work at The Revolving Museum. Compass students will meet at the Stoklosa and a bus will be provided to and from the Revolving Museum. Join the ARTbotics program run by Adam Norton today!

ART Mania!
Art Mania will be an introductory art class that will give you a hands-on idea of what an art class is like at the high school level. Work with all different supplies: oil pastels, colored pencils, charcoal, Sume-i Ink, watercolor, printmaking and tie dye.  You will create a many different types of art.  It will be an exciting class that will be a mix of studio work, along with outdoor projects that highlight Lowell’s architecture, artwork and landscapes.  You will even be able to show others your work by exhibiting your art at the end of the summer.
 
Break Dancing
Do you want to learn how to be a b-boy or b-girl dancer? Join this class and learn all the basic moves of b-boying from professional breakers. Team up with the Universoul team and impress your friends with all of your new moves. Have fun and express yourself through dance today!
 
Environmental Adventures
Are you a leader who cares about the environment? Working with Brian Cutler from the Lowell Parks and Conservation Trust and Sally Farrow from the Audubon Society, you will get a chance to work with professional environmentalists scouting out some of Lowell’s hidden parks and experience the natural beauty of our city. As you understand more about these spaces, you will then get a chance to identify and solve environmental problems in our community by developing your very own community service project. This is a very exciting opportunity, don’t miss it!
 
Money $marts
Do you dream about making tons of money? Join this class and learn the ins and outs of financial freedom. Figure out a personal budget for yourself, open a bank account at Jeanne d’Arc Credit Union and understand how bank accounts, debit cards, and credit cards work. Learn how to use your math skills in a real life situation.
 
Spoken Word, Performance, and Improv
Do you want to see your name in lights? Join this class and become the performance artist you always wanted to be. Gain confidence in yourself as you learn how to write and perform your own piece. This class is great for all students interested in learning public speaking skills and being more confident in front of groups.  You will get a chance to perform at the end of the summer!
 
Photovoice – Girls only
Learn how to use photography as a way of expressing yourself. You will be given a camera to take pictures of things that matter to you and your community. You will also get the chance to show your work at public exhibit. Be heard, be seen! Join today.  Sponsored by Girls, Inc.
 
The Compass Newspaper
Do you enjoy writing and news reporting? Well, the Compass Newspaper is for you! Join Ms. Murphy and learn how to write a news article, take photographs, and design a newspaper.  What are the interesting events happening in your community, school, or neighborhood that you report?
 
Fun in the Sun Games
Get moving!  Join us at the Stoklosa Field to learn and play a variety of outdoor sports.  Have you ever wanted to learn flag football, ultimate Frisbee, 3-on-3 Bball, kick, pass and punt contests, and archery? Here is your chance to learn the benefits of exercise, sportsmanship and team building as you get in shape and enjoy the summer weather!
 
Got Culture?
Lowell is well known for it diversity. Many immigrant groups have come to the city and helped to shape interesting and authentic neighborhoods. In this class you will explore these neighborhoods by meeting with and interviewing the people that make up these places to understand their lives and cultures, learning about foods, music, style of dress and other things that make up a person’s culture. You will get the chance to make a short documentary film.
 
Make Your Move Chess Boot Camp
Do you love logic and games? Bulk up your mind and heart, as you combine the mental strength needed to play chess with the physical strength required to do some light physical activity. Join Mr. Freeman in this program as you learn the moves of pro chess players while you get your heart rate up!
 
(r)Evolving Museum: Public Art
Work with professional artist, Diana Coluntino, from the Revolving Museum to design a public art project that will displayed in Downtown Lowell during the Folk Festival.  Compass students will meet at the Stoklosa and a bus will be provided to and from the Revolving Museum. Put your creativity to work!
