- Welcome to Lowell High School, a school recognized in 1999 as one of the nation’s top urban high schools by U.S. News & World Report for our outstanding educational program. Today, we continue to provide a healthy blend of time-tested and innovative lessons in our classrooms, the latest in computer and media technology, and top-notch educational and sporting facilities in an effort to foster within our diverse students the skills and attitudes needed to be responsible, contributing members of a global society and lifelong learners.
Since 1831, Lowell High School has established a rich tradition of helping shape leaders in all facets of life: from politics to the pulpit, from business to the arts, from academia to sports, from the military to medicine. Apart from our Carney Medalists, whose names remind us daily of our academic heritage, our outstanding graduates have included Paul E. Tsongas, a former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate; author Jack Kerouac; Ed McMahon, a national radio and television star; U.S. Congressman Martin T. Meehan; Ted Leonsis, founder of America On Line (AOL); William Cardinal O’Connell; Raymond Riddick, a former professional football player and Lowell High School coach; and Gen. Costas Caragianis, a famous Army General.
Our enrollment has increased steadily over the last decade—to nearly 4,000 ethnically-diverse students, making Lowell High the state’s second-largest public high school—and it will continue growing because of successful programs like our Latin Lyceum and specialized Academies, as well as our continuing partnerships with the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Middlesex Community College.
Our sports programs consistently rank among the top in the Merrimack Valley Conference and the state. Lowell High School offers 30 varsity sports, as well as freshman and junior varsity level sports, fielding a total of 68 teams. Our various sports programs attracted 1,340 student-athletes this year alone. Beyond sports, Lowell High School offers 30 clubs in which all students can participate. There’s truly something for everyone here.
- We remain committed to helping all our students—those bound for college, the workforce or the military—not only succeed but also excel in our classrooms and beyond. To help our freshmen succeed, we recently revamped our cluster model and created a study skills seminar. Our sophomores will benefit from a newly-integrated history and English curriculum. We offer our upperclassmen specialized academies in Fine Arts, Communications, Management and Finance, Engineering, Technology, and Health and Bio-Science. Our partnerships with the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Middlesex Community College allow our students to take some college courses while still attending high school. Academically gifted students can participate in our four-year Latin Lyceum, a rigorous exam school modeled on a classical education. At the same time, we continue to provide skill sets for students whose immediate career plans do not include college. All courses—from college to Advanced Placement level—offer excellent student-to-teacher ratios, challenging and meaningful curriculum, and quality instruction aimed at raising student performance.
